The RDM4-N –
Our new 4-axis CNC V-lathe for light alloy wheels

Our new RDM 4-N is a 4-axis CNC V-lathe for light alloy wheels up to 26″ in diameter with a pallet table.

The machine is currently in final testing and we are proud to announce that the presentation will take place this November.

The RDM 4N is characterized by a machine body in hybrid design, which, in addition to maximum stability, enables vibration-free processing.

Presentation day will be November 19th

We are looking forward to presenting the RDM 4-N to the professional world for the first time and are already looking forward to the feedback from our long-standing business partners and new customers.

If you approach and pursue a project like this with a lot of passion for perfection, then you can hardly wait to present it to the public.

Our success story continues

The construction of our own vertical lathe has been a success since the beginning, with the first models already setting the bar in this industry.

The sale of vertical lathes could be continued with other partners in order to continue to exist in the market.

In addition to the lathes, we were able to start sales for boring mill manufacturer Lazzati from Italy.

The sale of our own lathes intensified our activities in India and the Middle East, where we were able to gain some new customers.

Since then we have had a partner for sales and service in Türkiye.

The Otto Fuchs company in Hungary was won back as a customer after more than 10 years.

As a result, we were also able to win the company BBS Motorsport as a customer for our lathe, which produces the most exclusive racing wheels on our machine.

At the same time, we broke new ground and designed and built the first hybrid lathes for high-gloss turning of aluminum wheels. With these machines we have immediately caught up with the world leaders in this segment.
The new customer, the Brock company in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is convinced of the quality and reliability of the machines, which we delivered as a turnkey solution including automation.

Regardless of the successes over the last 10 years, with the positive experience of the polishing lathe, we decided to redesign the successful model of our lathe from scratch. We look forward to the presentation in summer 2024 to continue the success story.

Our success story continues

Although the banking crisis in 2008/2009 caused a slump in sales for several months, the economic downturn was ultimately compensated for by service, spare parts and the carousel lathes with a long project planning period.

Sales of heavy horizontal lathes began, and we were able to win some well-known customers in the area of plant and turbine construction.

In addition to the USA and South Africa, our connections in the aluminum wheel industry also took us to India and China several times. The overhaul of machine assemblies or even complete machines was a further mainstay in our activities. Fortunately, we were able to recruit highly qualified employees who made the first steps into automation possible.

Collaboration with our driving force IMT, both in the area of lathes for the aluminum wheel industry and in the area of vertical lathes, became increasingly difficult. Since there was no viable concept for the future in sight, we began designing our own vertical lathe for the aluminum wheel industry in 2014. The step from sales representative to mechanical engineer was made. As a result, the hall area was doubled to around 800m².

Our success story continues

We were able to win one of Europe’s largest wheel manufacturers, RONAL, as a customer for IMT. This means that all aluminum wheel manufacturers in Europe are our customers.

Our historical customer, the Rial company – later renamed Uniwheels – founded its own production plant in Stalowa Wola, Poland, directly opposite ATS. Since the beginning, we have been the supplier of lathes and chip processing as well as industrial washing systems to both wheel manufacturers, which have shown enormous growth at this location.

The ATS company establishes a factory in Auburn, AL, USA, and we are a supplier of IMT lathes.

The Borbet company is expanding with the new factory in Thuringia and strong investments in the existing factories at the headquarters in Hallenberg and also in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Here too we are a supplier of lathes for IMT.

Sales of vertical lathes began in 2002 primarily with customers from the mechanical engineering sector, but contract manufacturers and the aviation industry were also new customers.

The almost unlimited growth in the mechanical engineering sector is leading to strained supply chains.

In 2000, Dugar + Schuster moved into its own premises in Langenfeld, initially with only 400 m² of hall space and an office building. At the same time, we were able to recruit additional employees for commissioning and service as well as the ever-growing spare parts business.

Move to Langenfeld

In the meantime, Mr. Janos Dugar had left the company for reasons of age, but his name remains in the company name to this day.

This also made it possible to move to Horst Schuster’s hometown of Langenfeld in the Rhineland, which reduced the daily commute to the office from 50 to 5 km.

The TVA company’s representation for the rim machines was no longer viable because the stability of the TVA company was at risk despite good sales.

CNC technology had recently found its way into machine tool construction, which reduced set-up times and enabled flexible use of the machines while improving precision.

During this pioneering period of CNC technology, TVA had too much faith in it. In theory, the double-spindle machine of the “Polyp” model could be used to finish machining two wheels in record time.

In practice, this lathe had 7 cross slides, which required a 14-axis NC control – this did not exist. TVA therefore used a SEPA robot controller. This turned out to be very problematic. The machines delivered to well-known customers were the subject of legal disputes and marked the end of the TVA.

The crisis at TVA was the reason why TVA’s executives and Horst Schuster thought about preparing for the future without TVA. These considerations ultimately led to the founding of the company IMT Intermato S.p.A. in 1983, in which Horst Schuster, together with Francesco Chinaglia, played a key role as later president.

BMW starts small series production of the M1 sports car.

Dugar + Schuster sells the first heavy-duty lathes from TACCHI from Italy – a tradition that continues today.

The aluminum wheel or commonly called the “aluminum rim” is not only used for sports purposes but also for sporty drivers – manufactured by established companies such as Otto Fuchs Metallwerke, Kolbenschmidt or Mannesmann Kronprinz.

But aluminum wheels were also brought onto the market by racing-enthusiastic entrepreneurs with the companies ATS, BBS, Borbet, Campagnolo, Cromodora, OZ, Rial, Ronal and Speedline.

Image: BMW M1 with it’s original Campagnolo wheels https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M1

A new market

Dugar + Schuster is entering this growth market as a pioneer by selling the copy-controlled vertical lathes from TVA from Italy, which are specially designed for the aluminum wheel product. (The photo, however, shows a more modern CNC controlled machine with a pallet changing system from the same manufacturer)

With these machines the success story of Dugar + Schuster began in the hotly contested market for aluminum rim production.

The series production of aluminum wheels with a high machining volume has always had to be carried out as effectively as possible, which is why TVA lathes with up to 3 carbide tools working at the same time came in handy.

The vertical spindle also made inserting and removing the wheels by hand much more ergonomic than the competition with a horizontal spindle.
